GCSE Writers
Welcome to the GCSE English Descriptive Writing section of my website.
Writing well is one of the most valuable skills a student can develop, and in the GCSE English exam it is worth around a quarter of the available marks.
Yet, it often causes the greatest anxiety. Many students struggle to know how to begin, lose confidence before they've really started, or believe they're simply "no good" at writing.
My aim is to change that – one step at a time.
I've been teaching creative writing since 2004 and, alongside my teaching, have worked as a professional writer. Through both experiences, I've learned that good writing is about using simple, practical techniques that help ideas flow naturally.
Throughout this website you'll find resources designed to support Year 9–11 students as they prepare for the GCSE English Descriptive Writing part of the exam.
To introduce these techniques, I've created a free GCSE Writing Guide. It explains three easy-to-follow methods I use in my teaching and shows how they can help students overcome the blank page and improve their exam performance.
For students who would like more personalised support, I also offer friendly online group tuition. Sessions are carefully structured, encouraging and practical. They give students the opportunity to develop their writing skills in a supportive environment. I also give specific and personalised feedback.
It is a great way to prepare for the GCSE English Language exam.
Whether you're looking for a few ideas to support learning at home, a structured approach to improving descriptive writing, or regular tuition, I hope you'll find something here that helps.
Writing is a skill that grows with practice, guidance and encouragement.
My goal is to help every student discover that they can become a more confident writer—one step at a time.
