Flash Fiction Competition

As a part of the Writing Foundations course in 2026, we held a flash fiction competition. It was judged by members of the English department in the college and there was a prize of a £20 Amazon voucher.

It was a real challenge: the maximum word count was 99 words and the title was an ambiguous one, 'Being Somewhere Else'.

In week seven we talked about what is required for a successful piece of flash fiction and looked at some examples. Students were encouraged to apply the things they had previously learned in the course, focusing on one specific aspect, either plot, character or setting. Free writing for ideas is always a good place to start. The winner and honorary mentions were announced in the final week.

The quality of all the entries was high, with a varied approach to the theme. Please take a look at the ones that are on this page.  You'll see how an accomplished writer can tell a story even in less than 100 words.

A big thank you from me for the efforts of all in the class and for taking up the challenge. That in itself is a needed quality for writers who want to be productive and successful.  And thanks to the judges as well for their time.  A very fruitful end to a very enjoyable course.
