Free Writing

A Creative Writing Exercise

Free writing is an excellent creative writing exercise for writers of all levels. It’s a simple but powerful way to relax, generate ideas and improve your writing skills.

Taking a few minutes to sit down regularly and write whatever comes to mind can be both calming and rewarding.

How to do a free writing exercise

Find a quiet place, sit down for a short time and write whatever is in your head. Don’t rush — just relax and write.

Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling or grammar, and definitely don’t stop to edit. This is not about getting it “right”.

If your writing doesn’t seem to make sense, that’s often the most creative part. When you finish, read it back and note any words or phrases you like.

Try free writing two or three times a week and you’ll quickly build a collection of ideas to use in your creative writing.

Free writing ideas

  • Nature – seasons, animals, landscapes

  • Feelings – joy, fear, vulnerability, power

  • Everyday life – travel, work, family, food

Completing a regular free write keeps your creative writing muscles nicely toned.

Many writers say it’s the most enjoyable writing they do.

Let your writing flow free with a Free Write.
