Free Writing

Free writing is an excellent activity for writers.

Taking the time to sit down regularly and simply write whatever comes to mind can be very relaxing and rewarding.

The way to do it?

Find a quiet spot for a few minutes, sit down and write whatever’s in your head. Don’t rush, just relax and write.

Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling or any of the school room type things – and definitely don’t stop and edit your writing!!!!

Don’t worry if it doesn’t make any real sense, that is the most interesting and creative part of this activity. Afterwards, read back what you’ve written and note down the words and phrases you like.

Do this every day and in a very short time you’ll have a number of ideas and thoughts that will give you something to focus on in your writing and to work with.

Some ideas to get you started with are:

  • Nature – summer, winter, forest and woods, the sea, tress, flowers, butterfly, fox

  • Feelings – happiness, sadness, fear, joy, contempt, power, vulnerability

  • Every day life – travelling, workplace, sleeping, food, children and family, holidays

Many writers will say how doing a daily Free Write is the most enjoyable writing they ever do.

Now you can join them.

Enjoy your free writing.
